The new patient gown – resembling a wrap-around robe that completely closes in the back and front– is being rolled out on several inpatient floors at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit. It is among the first inventions to be made public by the Henry Ford Innovation Institute in collaboration with the College for Creative Studies.

The newly designed gown is:

Completely closed in the back, creating more privacy for patient

Made of a thicker, cotton/polyester blend material, which keeps patients warmer than the previous patient gowns

Double-breasted in the front, using three snaps, instead of ties, to close the gown

Intuitive in design, with different colored snaps and stitching along the left and right sides of the gown, making it easy for patients to put on

Accessible for IVs and other medical lines. The health care teams say it offers them uncompromised clinical access to the patient without needing to remove the gown

“Our No. 1 goal was to close the backside of the gown with our design,” says Michael Forbes, a product designer at the Henry Ford Innovation Institute and graduate of the College for Creative Studies (CCS).

“A simple change can have a large impact on the patients’ stay at a hospital. By creating a hospital gown that is safe, stylish and comfortable, we’ve made the patient feel more at home, like they’re wearing their own garments.”

The gown, which began with a drawing two years ago from CCS students working at the Innovation Institute, is now being tested by patients like Ismail Khalil, M.D., a vascular surgeon from Lebanon who traveled to Henry Ford Hospital for a liver transplant.

Dr. Khalil has the unique perspective as both a physician and now a patient on the design of the new hospital gown versus the traditional hospital gown.

“The new gown is the ultimate in simplicity and sophistication,” he says. “The old gown was uncomfortable with the ties in the back; I did not like it. I’d much rather walk down the hall in the new gown; it fits well and you feel decent. It looks good too. What more could you want?”

The new gown is tailored to fit two patient populations. Using the snaps on either side of the gown, it can adjust from a size large to an extra large, allowing for it to fit more patients with a single design.

The gown is navy and light blue, to coincide with the Henry Ford Hospital colors. The colors, however, can easily be modified for other hospitals to fit their brand.

The goal, Forbes says, is to license the design to an existing gown manufacturer, which would then produce and sell the gown nationally.

The cost to manufacture and purchase the new gown is very comparable to existing gowns, says Forbes. Laundering is exactly the same too; the new gown meets with current national hospital cleaning standards.

DETROITA Detroit hospital has a new patient gown that aims to offer a little more style, comfort and – perhaps most importantly – rear coverage for patients.

Resembling a wrap-around robe, the gown closes in the back and front and is made of a thicker, cotton and polyester blend than a typical gown to keep patients warmer. It has three snaps, instead of ties, to close it, and it’s accessible for IVs and other medical lines.

“A simple change can have a large impact on the patients’ stay at a hospital,” said Michael Forbes, a product designer at the Henry Ford Innovation Institute and graduate of the College for Creative Studies in Detroit.

The new gown is being used on several inpatient floors at Henry Ford Hospital after about two years of work on its design, the hospital said.

The gown was developed by the Henry Ford Innovation Institute in collaboration with the College for Creative Studies. The “No. 1 goal was to close the backside of the gown,” Forbes said in a statement Monday, and officials hope to license the design to an existing manufacturer.

One patient testing the new robe, Dr. Ismail Khalil, a vascular surgeon from Lebanon, Mich. who was set to undergo a liver transplant at Henry Ford Hospital, told CBS Detroit the new robe is a big upgrade.

“The old gown was uncomfortable with the ties in the back; I did not like it,” he said. “I’d much rather walk down the hall in the new gown; it fits well and you feel decent. It looks good too. What more could you want?”

Forbes added to CBS Detroit the new gown has similar manufacturing costs to older models, and meats current national hospital cleaning standards.

Detroit — The despised hospital gown with its drafty backside may soon be a relic.

Researchers at Henry Ford Health System have come up with a snugger alternative: a wrap-around robe.

The new patient gown, which closes in the back and front, is being rolled out at Henry Ford Hospital. Made of a thicker fabric, the gown closes with snaps instead of ties. It also provides easy access for intravenous lines and other medical equipment.

“Our No. 1 goal was to close the backside of the gown with our design,” said Michael Forbes, a product designer at the Henry Ford Innovation Institute, a center established by the health system to find creative solutions to health care challenges.

“A simple change can have a large impact on the patients’ stay at a hospital. By creating a hospital gown that is safe, stylish and comfortable, we’ve made the patient feel more at home, like they’re wearing their own garments.”

The gown was developed over more than a year and a half by the institute with design help from three students from the College for Creative Studies in Detroit. The gown is the first product for which the Institute has requested a patent.

Forbes said the gown was tested on more than 300 patients, including Dr. Ismail Khalil, who was recently a liver transplant patient at Henry Ford Hospital.

“Throughout my one-month hospital stay, that’s the only thing I insisted on wearing, I refused to wear the other gown,” said Khalil, a vascular surgeon from Lebanon who said he wants to take one of the gowns home with him when he returns to his country.

“Nobody is looking at your behind.”

Khalil said he’s been dealing with hospital gowns his entire career, and it’s not just a matter of comfort. He said the ties on the backs of gowns can rub up against patients’ skin and cause sores, and they can be so uncomfortable they keep patients from falling asleep.

The new, double-breasted gown can adjust from a size large to an extra large.

The innovation team also held a focus group with doctors and nurses to determine the clinical needs for the gowns, Forbes said.

“We came to a compromise with doctors and nurses to give them uncompromised access,” he said, “while allowing patients to still have a closed rear.”

Lung cancer poses a unique problem. Delivery of precise, highly targeted radiation to the lung is difficult because the tumor moves as the patient’s lungs move during the process of breathing. If radiation is delivered to the lung without precise motion planning, the potential exists not only to miss the tumor, but also to damage healthy cells surrounding the tumor. The Phantom Lung is a device being developed by Hualiang Zhong, Ph.D., as part of a project funded by the National Institutes of Health. Teamour Nurushev, Ph.D., Indrin Chetty, Ph.D., as well as Gregory Auner, Ph.D. and his team of engineers assisted in the design and development of the Phantom Lung. This lung device allows radiation oncologists and medical physicists to work together to understand the nature of lung tumor motion and, consequently, to validate models developed to account for accurate targeting of the tumor during motion. Ultimately, the Phantom Lung will be used to improve patient outcomes by potentially improving targeting accuracy and limiting radiation dose to surrounding healthy cells.
